Lovable pair

Laurel and Hardy, such a memorable pair: so loud, so fearless, so hungry.

Spiders and ticks and ants - oh my, that was just the beginning of the feast for the Harbert Avenue guinea fowl named after the old-time comedians.

"There used to be four guineas, then Laurel and Hardy, and then it was down to Laurel," says neighbor Sharon Dobbins, a pianist, singer and music teacher. An avid animal lover, she'd routinely walk her street feeding the cats, treating the dogs and spreading a little corn for Laurel.

"The guineas were introduced by my neighbor (Vincil Bishop) as pets, but we all liked them," Dobbins says. "Other than their hollering at 6 in the morning, nobody minded."

"Our guineas," neighbor Donna Humphreys affirms, "traveled the neighborhood at will."

Laurel weighed a couple of pounds, sported dark gray feathers with white spots and a featherless head, and reflected typical guinea fascination with her image in a window or patio door.
