UAE students bring thematic novelty to 5th GFF 14 films by Emirati students in Gulf Students Competition

Young Emirati filmmakers are deriving inspiration for their movies from quirky trends in contemporary society ñ anything from home-bred wild cats that now make news headlines for their unexpected city prowl to fashionable hairdos that defy conventions ñ bringing a fresh dose of novelty to the fifth Gulf Film Festival. Held under the patronage of Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) from April 10-16, GFF 2012ís short-list of Emirati films selected for the Gulf Student Short Competition include 14 films ñ 10 of them world premieres – that are as diverse as their content as in their filmmaking style.
If you have wondered about those lion cubs and leopards popping their heads out of Dubai-registered Land Cruisers with increasing frequency, Marwan Alhammadiís Cats will present you a new perspective. The short film, which makes its world premiere at GFF, puts the spotlight on four exotic cats that live in UAE homes.
