Two YA visions of the future, both bleak
22.05.12
, Kira Walker is a medic who works in the East Meadow maternity ward and watches every baby born succumb within 56 hours to RM. The deadly virus unleashed during the Break by Partials — genetically engineered semi-human soldiers — has nearly wiped out humans.
Kira is among 40,000 survivors living on Long Island, N.Y., under the Hope Act, which mandates that every female become pregnant at 18. The powers that be think the law will help society find a baby with RM resistance.
Kira, a promising virologist, isn’t so sure. When the Senate lowers the mandatory pregnancy age to 16, she decides to take her future, and her decimated world, into her own hands.
She knows that Partials are immune to RM, so she plans to capture one, study it in the field and bring back a cure. But even the best-laid plans of teenagers in 2076 can go awry.
For Kira and friends, that means a quickly shifting plot that sees a Partial restrained for medical testing in East Meadow, Kira tricked and taken as a Partial hostage in Manhattan, a human uprising against the Senate back in East Meadow, and more.
