Defensive breakdows costly for Redbird women
ST. CHARLES, Mo. — A perplexed expression of disbelief spread across Illinois State women’s basketball coach Stephanie Glance’s face several times Friday at The Family Arena.
Uncharacteristic miscues plagued the Redbirds in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and a 56-54 loss to Drake was the costly toll.
“I think perhaps some of our youth, and having not been here before, showed up today unfortunately,” Glance said. “We have a lot of players who have not played very many minutes in the conference tournament. I would like to have hoped we were past that. But we showed some youth we haven’t seen in awhile.”
The Redbird defense broke down several times in the second half and twice in the final minute as Drake freshman Kyndal Clark scored the final four points on drives to the basket.
“Everybody makes mistakes in the course of a game,” said ISU junior Candace Sykes. “The key is playing through it. We came up short tonight.”
