Jake the one-legged Kea meets new mates

Natureland Zoo (Nelson) plays an important role locally in re-habilitating injured native wildlife. Staff members are often called upon by the Department of Conservation, SPCA and local people to assist injured native birds. Last year, a young male kea with a badly broken leg, was handed to Natureland Zoo by a member of the public.
Operations Manager, Gail Sutton, says: "The kea, named Jake after the person who rescued him, was found in 88 Valley, near Lake Rotoiti, in October. He had suffered a compound fracture of the right leg (the bone was exposed) as a result of being caught in a trap and his foot was later surgically removed.
Following his operation, Jake was re-habilitated by Natureland Wildlife Vet, Mana Stratton, before being returned to the Zoo. During his recovery in quarantine, Jake has been closely observed to ensure that he is able to manage with one leg and his ability to forage for food has been assessed. Because of potential feeding problems the Department of Conservation and the Captive Co-ordinator for kea have agreed that he should be retained as part of the captive population.
