Cougars' Taylor earns CIS honour
22.05.12
The magnitude of being named the CIS women's basketball coach of the year hadn't hit Dave Taylor on Friday.
"Because we're in the midst of it, it's nice, but it doesn't seem like that big of a deal because it's a continuing reflection of the year that we've had," said Taylor, who received the honour during the awards banquet held in conjunction with the CIS women's basketball championship tournament in Calgary.
"I think it will be more meaningful in a few months - and certainly in a few years. Every time hopefully we're at nationals years from now, in the little book where it says previous winners, I'll be in there."
Taylor, who's in his sixth season as the Cougars' head coach, guided Regina to a 20-0 record in the 2011-12 Canada West regular season, a 35-2 mark overall and the No. 1 ranking in the CIS throughout the campaign. The 44-year-old Reginan also has helped the Cougars reach the CIS tournament for the fourth time in five seasons.
"When I have time to analyze the year, (winning the award) will be nice; I just haven't felt the emotion of it yet," said Taylor, whose squad is to open play at nationals today, 7 p.m., against the Calgary Dinos.
