Thoughtful food? Think about trying Cafe Jay's

Common headgear at fitness facilities includes headbands and ballcaps.
Seldom do you see a toque de cuisine.
Unless you’re visiting Downtown Athletic Club , where Chef Jay Kirkman has opened Cafe Jay’s to dish out fresh, thoughtful food in a casual atmosphere, to use my husband Kevin’s spot-on assessment.
What is thoughtful food? Kirkman spends Sundays baking fresh whole-wheat buns to toast for sandwiches. Side dishes are fresh vegetables or varied salads of ingredients like corn, black beans, black-eyed peas and whole wheat pasta.
Thursday’s sampling included “My Rosemary,” a panini of baked rosemary chicken breast, low-fat provolone, tomatoes, avocado, roasted bacon bits and a basil-olive balsamic vinegar on toasted multi-grain bread. And as I sat there listening to sneaker squeaks and echoing racquetball courts, I didn’t feel guilty with a lunch of 485 calories, according to Kirkman’s calorie counts.
