.. Were the unions the problem? Not entirely but they were a huge part of it. After all, it was those union workers who were doing the shoddy work and making rubbish cars, and it was their union actions and strikes that limited production and reduced profitability.
Unions weren't the only ones to blame though, management also shared responsibility by coming up with poor designs and using cheap and poor quality materials. ...

I had the misfortune of trying to work with Unite (TGWU then) and found a group of people who really did not want to change. The slightest change to working practices was met either with an "over my dead body" or, "well what's in it for me". By the time we'd progressed the business had changed and what was being negotiated was not really appropriate. They seemed to love conflict and stretch out negotiations. This is why we are not competitive because we are not able to adapt to change quickly enough most of the time
