Most of us now know DDT has an ugly side. It is absorbed and stored in the fat of animals. Predatory birds that eat those animals ingest more and more of the poison. Eventually, the toxins may build up to levels that are fatal to these birds. But perhaps even more insidious is that DDT poisoning can also result in weak and brittle eggshells. Therefore, fewer and fewer healthy chicks were being born.
In 1962, Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” sounded an alarm that many now recognize as the birth of America’s environmental movement. And DDT was one of Carson’s prime targets. In 1963, a census of Bald Eagles found only 417 pairs in the lower 48 states, and none at all in Mississippi. It took almost a decade of litigation and protests, but in 1972 all use of DDT was banned in the United States.
So when Barry first told me about the nest on the Biloxi River, that meant I then knew of a total of two Bald Eagle nests in Mississippi. The other nest was somewhere in the Delta. I had no idea if the Delta nest was active or not. A year later, I was still looking for my first sighting of a wild Bald Eagle in Mississippi.
