Results of the Great Backyard Count in

The 15th Great Backyard Bird Count results are in and the numbers look fantastic. I’m not even referring to the number of birds that were counted, but rather the number of people who got out there to participate.

More than 104,000 checklists were submitted, easily topping the previous record of more than 95,000. That’s significant because it means more people are interested in getting out there to count birds. That bodes well for the future of birds, as the more people who are interested in birds, the more people who are interested in protecting and saving birds.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is held over one weekend in February and gives ornithologists a historical database to track bird populations. It is held by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society.

When John Fitzpatrick, director of the Cornell Lab, was on my BirdCallsRadio show a few weeks ago, he said he hoped the number of GBBC participants would top 100,000. He was spot on — and that’s a good thing.
