Merchants looking for new head coach
Norwich Merchants head coach Steve Polgar has resigned after just one year behind the bench.
Ken Gillanders, the Merchants club president, confirmed Thursday during a phone interview with the Sentinel-Review that Polgar had left the organization.
“Steve Polgar resigned officially with us a few weeks ago. His motivations were primarily personal reasons,” Gillanders said. “We were very happy as an executive with him as coach. The professionalism and dedication he put forth and the tremendous hard work he put forth was incredible. We’re sorry to lose him but understand that people have to have a life outside the hockey rink as well.”
Norwich finished second (24-9-3) in the regular season with Polgar at the helm.
“It was a learning year," Polgar said after losing the Niagara West Junior C division to the New Hamburg Firebirds in mid-March. "I probably learned more than the players did. Norwich is such a great organization. I've been around hockey a long time and the dedication of the people who put the team on the ice is incredible."
