T-Birds and Trappers set to open NOJHL finals

As if one challenge wasn't enough, the Soo Thunderbirds must deal with another, en route to what they hope will be a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League championship.

Beginning Friday, the Western Division champion Thunderbirds square off with the Eastern Division champion North Bay Trappers for league bragging rights.

Start time for Game 1 of a best-of-seven series is 7:30 p.m. at Essar Centre.

While the entire championship schedule has yet to be released, Game 2 goes Saturday, also at 7:30 p.m. at Essar Centre.

Along with facing a formidable opponent, the T-Birds must also adjust to the absence of star winger Jake Wright.

The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native has been suspended by the league following his arrest early Sunday morning in the Michigan Sault.

Hours after the T-Birds swept the Soo (Mich.) Eagles from the Western final at Pullar Stadium, Wright was arrested and charged with being a minor consuming (alcohol) and for violation of a controlled substance.
