As of today, Stage II water restrictions will require Lubbock residents to become more water-conscious. For those who see the month of April as a time to bring birds and butterflies to their gardens, restricted water use could be detrimental. Master Gardener Lilla Jones and local nursery experts Mark Ivey and Ryan Smothers shared their advice to maintain water-conscious gardens and still attract butterflies and birds.
Jones, who gave a water-conscious presentation Tuesday, stated the success of a homeowner’s garden lies in the preparation.
She suggested homeowners focus on plants that require little water, blossom well in the shade, and still attract birds and butterflies traveling through the area in the spring.
“Think about making your garden hospitable, like you would your home to a person,” she said. “You want something to drink, someplace to eat, a place to rest and a place where the young are fed and feel safe.”
Mapping a garden and determining environmental factors to fit these features can bring a variety of animals. Homeowners should start with one feature at a time, make a blue print of a potential garden or slowly revamp section by section, as well as observe what grows around them, the shape of their yard, sun exposure and soil quality, Jones said.
