Exotic birds in dire need of homes

Space for rescued exotic birds in Southwest Florida is limited. At Parrot Outreach Society, there are over 50 birds ready for adoption .

The parrots are big, beautiful, and bold but many have been mistreated.

"She looked like something out of an Edward Scissorhands movie," said Shawn Kipfer about one of her rescued birds.

Inside Port Charlotte's Bonnie's Birds, they take in exotic birds when a nearby shelter is overwhelmed.

"The birds get put in the laundry room or out on the lanai. They're not given the proper toys and don't see a vet. They're neglected," said store owner Bonnie Grafton.

Charlotte county's animal control often must seize birds from deplorable conditions. Just last month, the department confiscated some.

Back in 2008, officers seized more than 200 birds found living in filth in a Port Charlotte Home.

"For someone to get a bird that may be needy so to speak without having the knowledge to address them... they could find themselves over their heads with problems," said Jones.
