'Smash,' Season 1, Episode 9, 'The Coup': TV Recap
21.05.12
Backstabbing, lies, betrayal and bowling – all on this week’s “Smash.” And then there are things we don’t care about in this episode because the stories aren’t being developed properly: Frank playing guitar hero, Leo’s court date and Dev’s promotion drama.
But to Broadway first! Ivy tells Sam that she hasn’t heard anything since the workshop. “You don’t think it’s dead, do you?” he asks? Julia (in bed while Frank fixes the TV) also thinks it’s dead; Frank thinks that as a first step it’s good, but the workshop went great. Julia also points out that Leo’s court date is next week. Then we’re treated to Frank singing Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” while playing Guitar Hero.
At Eileen’s new apartment she’s on the phone with Derek and they confirm that “the Cartwright girl” is amazing, and this week’s plot is set in motion. Eliss pops in and offers some help to Eileen since Tom doesn’t need him as much, since the workshop is over. And we’re introduced to Katie Rand (Grace Gummer), Eileen and Jerry’s daughter. Eliss runs back to Tom’s apartment to report that Eileen had nothing to say about the workshop and she and Derek were talking about Karen Cartwright. This sends Tom into a tizzy.
