Sister Sparrow, Dirty Birds set for Chicago debut

Just because she is the lone girl in a nine-piece band, that doesn’t mean Arleigh Kincheloe (AKA Sister Sparrow) rules the Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds’ roost.

“I’m not a prima donna,” Kincheloe says with a laugh. “Some days it is a little bit harder to be the only girl, though. There’s a lot of locker room talk in the van. Fortunately I have a good pair of headphones when I need to zone out. There are times when I have to phone a girlfriend to talk about girlie things, though.”

The New York-based band is a bit of a family affair. Kincheloe co-founded the band with her older brother, Jackson. Their cousin, Bram Kincheloe, is an accomplished drummer who has sat in with the likes of Branford Marsalis and Wynton Marsalis. “With Jackson and I, it’s not so much an older brother/younger sister thing,” she says. “We are close friends and have been for years. It is like he constantly feels like he needs to be the older brother protecting me. Still, in a dark bar, he’s a good person to have your back.”
