Outdoors: Parents should provide the best care for uninjured wildlife babies

While prematurely erupting mold spores, maple (especially box elder), juniper and poplar pollen have caused very early allergy problems for people, Tufts Wildlife Clinic has been receiving health-challenged, newborn animals several weeks earlier than normal. Veterinarians can usually guess fairly accurately what month it is just by looking at their patient list, but with global warming, the order of nature is changing.
Typically, hairless, newborn squirrels are first brought into the clinic around the beginning of April. This year, they arrived March 11. Baby rabbits aren't usually seen until the second week in April. They were brought in March 21.
At the peak of breeding season, the wildlife clinic will be overwhelmed with animals, some of which should never be brought there for care. The clinic, according to its dedicated and compassionate veterinarians, is intended to treat sick or injured wildlife, not healthy babies — numerous wildlife rehabilitators in the state
