Midnight workers
Officials and the subordinate staff in the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s secretariat have been literally burning the midnight oil ever since Akhilesh Yadav assumed office.
Mr Yadav has a penchant for working late into the night. All important decisions are taken around midnight, which means that the staff is called back to complete the formalities.
Worst hit is the staff in the home department that is expected to send transfer lists to all newspaper offices. Just recently, the staff sat until 3.30 am to complete the task of sending the list of 112 transfers to all newspaper offices.
When the chief minister wanted to declare his assets online, the staff was again required to sit late into the night uploading the details.
Worse still, the chief minister is no laggard and is usually back in office by 10.15 am, which means that his staff returns home in the wee hours and has to report back within a few hours.
“It would be better if we were given a dormitory here so that we can stay back and go home for weekends — if work permits. The chief minister is young and can take the strain, but we are all getting older by the day,” grumbled a section officer.
