Hawks still battling injuries as outdoor track season opens

When the Ankeny boys’ track team opened its outdoor season by hosting a quadrangular meet on March 27, the Hawks’ squad resembled a M*A*S*H unit.

Ankeny returns eight state qualifiers from last year’s team that placed 31st in the Class 4-A meet at Drake Stadium, but four of them are currently battling or still recovering from injuries.

“We’re really young, and we’re beat up a little bit,” said Ankeny coach Dave Jones. “We’ve had some injuries that we’re dealing with, but we’ll see how it goes. We might have a slow start to the season, but hopefully we’ll get there at the end.”

Among the team’s returnees are seniors Ty Ash, Jordan Bauer, Logan Bredesky, Reid Ryan, Chris Schreck, Nathan Stahl and Ryan Wendt. Junior Drew Deiter is also back.

Ash and Deiter are expected to be two of the team’s top hurdlers. They helped the Hawks to a 10th-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay at the state meet.

However, Deiter will be sidelined for at least two more weeks due to a broken leg.
