Bryan Brasher: Mississippi flood shuts marina at Island 40
29.05.11
MARION, Ark. -- When I first got to Memphis six years ago, one place I was a little slow to visit for the first time was the Island 40 Chute just across the Mississippi River from Memphis.
Island 40 didn't have the same global reputation for producing monster smallmouth bass as Pickwick Lake. I'd never heard Hank Williams Jr., brag about the crappie fishing at Island 40 the way he does with Kentucky Lake. And Island 40 didn't have the same fascinating back story as Reelfoot Lake and the earthquakes that caused it to form during the 1800s.
Island 40 was a much simpler destination -- and once I finally made it over there for the first time, that's what I came to love about it.
Now I wish I'd spent more time there over the years.
Because thanks to the floods, the Island 40 Chute as we've all known it is no more.
After nearly six decades of dodging flood waters in their basement, James and Dorothy Sample -- the charming couple that kept Daily's Boat Dock up and running all these years at Island 40 -- have finally experienced the end-all flood.
