Area ice sculptors work hard at fleeting art

When Aaric Kendall was in high school, working part time in the kitchen of a private dining club, he got the chance to carve a swan out of ice at a Springfield charity event.
“He was a young guy with an interest in ice carving,” said Darren Best, a Springfield chef and veteran ice carver. “We each had a block of ice. I would make a cut, then he would make a cut. When we were finished, we had two swans, and you almost couldn’t tell the difference between them. The kid’s a natural,” Best said.
Argenta resident Kendall, 33, has since gone on to win the U.S. Ice Carving Nationals and earned the right to compete in ice carving events held in conjunction with two winter Olympics — Turin, Italy, in 2006 and Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2010.
Ice carving, or sculpting, is a method of creating a design or a form in a block of ice with an assortment of tools. The carvings can be abstract or realistic and usually are made for decorative purposes, such as table centerpieces for weddings and conferences.
