We came, we saw and we conquered in the name of the women of Africa
Kilimanjaro. Recently, I was part of a group of 72 representatives from 36 African countries who climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in a challenge that ran from 5 to 9 March. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro was not just another adventure to me. It was about getting out of my comfort zone.We were going to the Roof of Africa to highlight an issue that too many of us take for granted. We hoped against hope that the “Africa-UNiTE Speak Out Climb Up to End Violence Against Women and Girls” campaign would achieve what it set out to do—raise awareness on ending violence against women.
The climbers cut across society. There were high profile celebrities, members of civil society, private and public sectors bigwigs and the media. We did it all to draw attention to an African crisis that should have been consigned to history decades ago.
This is our collective story of an experience that tested us to the limits, challenged our perceptions and ultimately re-affirmed our belief that a world free of gender-based violence is possible. We just have to want it badly enough and be ready to do what it takes to assure the female of the species of a safe and secure life:
