Celebrity chef serves up wings over Wanaka

Celebrity chef Simon Gault soared to fame as a judge on MasterChef NZ but he really will be a high flier next weekend.
Gault, an accomplished aerobatic pilot and owner of Auckland restaurants Euro and JSH, is making a guest appearance at the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow this Easter in his Thunder Mustang – a three-quarter scale replica of the World War II-era P-51 Mustang.
Gault's passion for flying was instilled by his father Bryan, a former instructor with the Royal New Zealand Air Force and Air New Zealand, who was initially reluctant to see his son follow in his footsteps.
"My dad always insisted that because of the uncertainties of medicals, and therefore livelihood, I should focus on some other career and fly as a hobby," said Gault. It was only once he had gained an instructor rating in gliders that his father finally relented and taught him to fly powered aircraft.
Gault saw a Thunder Mustang at the Oshkosh Airshow in the United States and decided that he had to have one. He formed a small syndicate to secure one from South Africa and he and his father used information from original pilot notes written for World War II Mustangs to learn how to fly it.
