Man faces charges for abandoning car in pond

Charges are pending against a man who allegedly took a taxicab home without telling Naperville police he had driven his rental car into a pond on the city’s far north side.
Police Sgt. Gregg Bell on Thursday declined to identify the man, saying only that he was 24 years old and did not live in Naperville.
The bizarre incident occurred about 8:45 a.m. Sunday, when police were notified of a car partially submerged in a pond near Bauer Road and Heatherton Drive, Bell said. The pond is in the Cress Creek Commons neighborhood.
No one could be seen inside the car, a 2011 Mazda 6, Bell said. Members of Naperville’s police and fire water rescue unit, or “dive team,” scoured the waters, but found no one in the pond, he said.
The car was towed out of the water. Bell said it proved to have been rented from a company in Lombard.
Police used the company’s records to locate the man who had rented the car, Bell said. He was found uninjured.
