But Mackay quickly hit back, saying “I don’t care what others say.”
The Scot added: “Robbie Savage has given his view and that’s fair comment. That’s why he is a pundit.
“People can write us off or say we are going to be European champions, it doesn’t matter to me.
“I know what we are trying to do and what we want to achieve.
“The players know, the staff know and Cardiff City fans have been tremendous.
“They are the realities I deal with and not what pundits may think will happen. My focus is on our club, our players and our fans.”
Striker Kenny Miller is ready to return as City get the chance to strike an early blow on their play-off rivals.
Miller has not started the last two Championship matches – draws with Coventry and Birmingham – because of ankle trouble. But the Scot is set to lead the attack again in the hope of ending a scoring drought which stretches back to the 3-2 win over Portsmouth on January 21.
