my bird sky was my best bird ever. he had died we think because we were taking a x-mas picture and he ate a pionseta a second l8ter he had spit it out. since he had died i had 2 birds. none of them as good as sky i was thinking of getting another pet

“It was all run by the seat of my pants,” he says. “I had no business background, I’m a biologist by training but I learnt a hell of a lot very quickly.”

The indecision of the novelist Jeffrey Archer led to Clark making another counter-intuitive career switch, this time from battling birds’ mess to dealing in art.

While browsing in a gallery following the sale of his pest control business, he spotted an LS Lowry painting. Despite the £200,000 price tag and the competing interest of Lord Archer – who wanted to go away and think about it – Clark bought it, much to the displeasure of his then wife. “She went ballistic,” he recalls.

Presumably she was rather more impressed when he sold it for £400,000 just six months later.

“After that I went mad and bought all the Lowrys I could. I had 50 while I was still working out my [contract with my previous business].”
