Competitive spirit alive, well at annual youth fair

Logan Durrett had an entry for almost every category of the home economics and environmental science projects portion of the 37th annual Denton County Livestock Association Youth Fair and Rodeo on Wednesday.
The 14-year-old brought two photographs he’d taken, a picture he cross-stitched, cookies and a cake he baked, and plants he’d grown. But his favorite, he said, were the photographs.
This is his second year to compete.
“His mother just wanted to get him involved” because he’s home-schooled, said his grandmother, Brenda Durrett.
The projects portion of the fair and rodeo had 225 entries — from clothing to crafts to baked goods.
“We always get some neat art,” volunteer Pat Thompson said.
There are two age levels, Thompson said — junior level, with competitors age 13 and younger, and senior level, which is 14 and older.
Participants can have up to one entry in each category, said Mary Bridges, home economics superintendent.
