ROTH: A gender bending riddle solved

"What do you think has happened here, and have you ever experienced anything like this before?"
Uh, no. I'd never seen anything like that.
And I hate to admit it, but without pictures, I had my doubts.
Maybe one side was just paler in places, not "female," which would mean a leucistic bird, odd but not all that rare.
Nope. Tanya insisted it was half-and-half.
Then, a week or so later, another note: "Sent you the pics. Did they arrive?"
No. Now I was really starting to doubt.
And soon was humbled, because a few days later, the photos did show up in my inbox.
Sure enough, exactly as she had described: Male coloring on one side, female coloring on the other.
The photos were small and low-resolution, but they were unmistakable.
Wow.
"OK if I send these off to experts at Cornell's Lab of Ornithology?" I asked.
Sure.
Meanwhile, I was wondering what in the world was going on with this bird. I asked Tanya about its behavior.
