BIRD TOUR TO NÄRÄNKÄVAARA HILL, A PART OF PRIMEVAL KUUSAMO

The taiga forest of Näränkävaara Hill is a very old coniferous forest, for example the oldest living tree in Finland – over 660 years old, a pine tree – continues on with it’s “millenious” existence there.

Näränkavaara Hill is situated in south-eastern Kuusamo right beside the Russian border. We will walk along the causeway for about three kilometers over Hyöteikönsuo Marsh to the foot of Näränkävaara Hill. There we can observe the hectic and noisy games, going on in the marsh caused by the mating and nesting waders such as Jack Snipe, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Spotted Redshank and Wood Sandpiper. Also waterfowl carry on with their fun and games there when the marsh is flooding in early summer. Bean Geese and Swans are commonly seen then.

Many eastern/northern specialities thrive in the area of Näränkävaara Hill. You can find the most exotic bird of Kuusamo, the Red-flanked Bluetail, singing from the top of a fir tree. Other possible species are for example Greenish Warbler, Siberian Jay, Three-toed Woodpecker, Pine Grosbeak, Two-barred Crossbill, Hazel Hen, Capercaillie and Willow Grouse. Also a Golden Eagle often soars above the hill on sunny days. The scenery from the top of the hill all the way to Russia is striking with endless areas of primeval taiga forest.

During the tour it is possible to have a rest in the repaired main building of Näränkä farm and also sense how severe the living conditions of the people were in the old days. A genuine Finnish sauna heated with wood is also available. The farm of Näränkä was originally inhabited from the year 1841 all the way up to the 1960’s. People in those times lived only on what nature had to offer.

We will have coffee and Finnish buns during the tour.

Price 80€/ person (minimum 3 people)
