Red-flanked Bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus)

The most legendary species of Kuusamo. Recorded breeding
again in the last years in addition to several singing males.
In the eighties there were only a few records of this taiga
forest species. In the fifties and seventies there were more
records and then also from eastern and central Finland. The
best site is Valtavaara-Konttainen (2), but the species can
be found on other fells with old growth forest, eg Iivaara (20).
Seems to arrive fairly early in mid May, when there is still
snow at the breeding sites.
