As reported in the Mail yesterday, the protected bird’s carcass was found with its head severed at the side of Albert Village Lake at around 8am on Thursday last week.

After studying photographs which were taken by Simon Dawson who was walking his parents’ dog, experts at the RSPCA now believe a dog may have been responsible for the brutal attack.

The charity is now calling for owners to keep their dogs on leads at all times if their pets chase other animals.

A spokesman said: “This poor swan would appear to have suffered a horrific death enduring immense pain and suffering.

“Dog owners have to act responsibly when out with their pets in a public place or they could face prosecution.

“It is not acceptable to allow your dog to attack, injure or maim animals whether that be water birds in a park or sheep in a field.

“If your dog will chase and go to attack other animals then they should be kept on a lead at all times.”
