Pets that are for the birds

A dog may be man's best friend, but when was the last time it said, "Hello" to you?
That is one of the strengths of having a bird as a pet, an option many people may not consider, but is certainly an alternative for a number of reasons.
According to Debbie Wisnieski, owner of Noah's Ark, a longtime Sioux City pet store, most people who come to the store in search of a bird have experience.
"Some have had a bird as a pet and it has passed away or others would like another bird," she said. "Some who come in have researched what they want."
Western Iowa Tech Community College student Ashley Kellen has two blue parakeets, Emma and Embry.
"The main reason I purchased birds was because most apartments in Sioux City do not allow dogs or cats, and if they do, there is a large pet deposit on them," she said.
For those novices who know nothing about the avian species, Wisnieski offered a bird's eye view.
"Canaries are a nice bird to start with because they are so tame, you can hold them in your hand," she said. "Obviously, the bigger the bird, the more the commitment involved in keeping it."
