Angelou offers advice on life

Celebrated poet, civil rights activist and author Maya Angelou wove poetry, advice and encouragement through her speech to Texas Woman’s University students Tuesday.
She even sang some of the poetry, including Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven.
The 83-year-old said Poe’s poem was something she envisioned Sean Combs, an American hip-hop star that goes by Diddy, performing.
In an impression of the rapper, Angelou said, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,” tapping her foot to the beat and bobbing her head.
She said if her knees weren’t bad, she’d dance and quote Shakespeare.
Angelou told the estimated 900 attendees that she comes to institutions of higher education like TWU excited to teach.
Angelou said she once thought she was a writer who could teach, but now knows she’s a teacher who can write.
“I’m a teacher — and a good one, too,” she said with a laugh as the crowd applauded.
